adjustment to college life

7 11 2008

So college life….what to say. So far it has been a lot different than high school. There is definitely a lot more freedom then in high school. I feel like I have time to spare, while in high school I was constantly trying to manage my time.

hmm. As far as classes go, they are a lot different then high school classes. We go through a chapter a day in classes which makes it hetic. Thankfully, there are lecture notes that are posted online that have the material that we will be tested on for Biology. Greek, on the other hand, drives me insane. It is a language that is meant to be read more than spoken and it is quite confusing with all of it’s rules and different cases. Now writing has to be my favorite class ( I know not a shocker to some). My writing class is on Gender and American Pop Culture. It is a very interesting class and my teacher is very lively and fun. She reminds me of Mrs. Langdahl in the sense that they are both very passionate with what they teach. Also, they are both the hardest graders in the school. I know, lucky me. Lastly, I am taking a Literature class on the Impact of Imperialism. This is also a very interesting class because my teacher is a British man from South Africa who experience apartheid first hand. He is able to share his connection with the effects of apartheid with the class, which is magnificient.

hmmm now my social life….hard to believe that I am a lot less social in school. I kind of went back to my shell at school, but I leave it on the weekends when I teach first communion at a Vietnamese Catholic School in Seattle. The feeling of teaching kids is really rewarding, espicially when it is about things that I really believe in. Also, I joined a youth group at the Vietnamese Church in Seattle and found that it is a lot different than Portland’s. I never met so many youth that are so passionate about the things that they do….wait I lied…leadership students are like this, except this is with Catholicism. Last Saturday, I went to this Youth Convention which reminded exactly of OASC’s Summer Leadership Camp.

As far as my friends from high school, it is easier to maintian contanct with some more than others. All of my best friends go to OSU and I haven’t talked to then since I have been gone. We all seem to be too busy with our lives, which is sad. But I know when we can, we will reunite and have fun in Portland :-)

Okay, I think that I talked enough for one blog…..see ya next time!
